PATNA: Patna High Court is expected to hear a joint petition filed by 376 lawyers from different parts of the country seeking early release of a gangrape survivor and two of her wellwishers from judicial custody. They were sent to judicial custody by a judicial magistrate of Araria on July 11 for contempt of court and causing disruption in court works.

The letter petition signed by Prashant Bhushan,Indira Jai Singh,Vrinda Grover and other lawyers from New Delhi,Mumbai,Kolkata,Bangalore,Patna and Araria demanded urgent intervention of the chief justice of Patna High Court in the case.

They said the 22 years old woman was made to get her statement recorded under section 164 in a disoriented mind.Judicial magistrate did not understand her fragile state when she pressed for re-recording of her statement in presence of two of her well wishers.Maghistrate sent him to police custody first and then to judicial custody at Dalsinghsarai,240 kms from Araria. She was not examined for Covid though she alleged she was gang raped

Contempt of court proceedings were started against her and two others though then judicial magistrate has no power for contempt of court proceedings, the lawyers regretted.
